Scalp Infection?

So I've been picking my scalp since I was 9 and it is covered in scabs. I no longer feel pain when I pick at all. But I am constantly doing it, even in public. I have dark brown hair, so you can't see the sores on my head, but I am worried that they could be infected. How do I know if they are? It is hard to see through my hair.
