Do I Fit?

I'm a 25 year old female. I am just now realizing I really might have a problem. I have picked my skin since childhood. When I would get mosquito bites I would scratch until I would bleed and then I would pick the scabs over and over and over. When I would have a fight with my parents I would scratch in my hair until the spot would bleed. As a teenager I would spend hours in the bathroom picking my ance. In response to being upset it would be a relief. Its to the point now in my adult like that I cannot NOT pick. I get small bumps on the back of my arms and I pick at them when I am at work with out even knowing that I do it. Same with my back, chest, and my face. Do I fit the bill for this "Skin Picking Disorder" If so ... where do I start to get help? I never really realized there was something wrong with it. It has bothered me my whole life and I would LOVE to stop the habit. Please advise !

YES - YOU ABSOLUTELY FIT. ------------------~~~~~ I would start by mentioning that you are having some anxiety. This carries little stigma but picking is not well understood. Once you meet with the therapist, then bring up the more specific issues you are struggling with, such as picking and/or any other impulse control behaviors or depression you are experiencing. ******************************** I suggest the following website as a starting off point. Go to Pyschology Today magazine's website and enter your zip code. ***************************** *********************************You many click on each therapist's name and it will give loads of details including what types of mental illnesses they treat. You'll want to find someone who treats Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD) and who uses either Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and possibly someone who works with Impulse Control and or Anxiety as well.*************************~~~~~Sincerely, Igga.
