Picking at Toenails

I came here looking for people who might pick their toenails as well! I have problems picking my skin and scabs but the thing that is worrying me is my habit of cutting my toenails so short that they'll be gone. I've found that I'm less likely to pick them if I find they look pretty, so I let them grow long (if I can, it's so hard) and I paint them. I find that if I paint them I'll pick off the paint rather than the toenail. I really wish I didn't do this. Toenails are so fragile and it's very easy to permanently damage them so they'll never grow normal again. I think one of my toenails is this way now and I wish it wasn't.
