Cuticle Picking

Hey All First time here and had a few questions. I have this really bad habit of picking off my cuticles on my fingers. In fact I did one just recently and things seem to have grown back but the place where I picked it off still hurts. Not sure if there's an underlying issue or is it more because I "disrupted" it? Any info is appreciated.
