I pick at my cuticles/skin around my fingernails

I pick at the skin around my nails and I was wondering if anyone had some tips for healing them. I pick until they bleed sometimes and scab over. I also pick at the scabs. I saw some posts about calamine lotion on here but wasn’t sure if that would work on my fingers. If you have some tips about this or are going through the same thing, please comment! Thank you!

Don't do calamine...it's the most idiotic idea. It dries out skin and prevents healing.

Calamine doesn't seem a good option....you will want to be picking that off. What have you used in the past....and what have docs prescribed?

I’ve just been using antibiotic ointment (Neosporin) and bandaids to heal the wounds. I tried using the bad tasting polish but it dried out my skin and made me pick more.
It’s not super bad/serious so I don’t have a doctor prescribing me anything.

I suggest you see a doctor. The issue with picking around your fingers is that it's easy to have an underlying issue that shkuld be diagnosed. In the meantime...you could try Spectro eczema. There is a steroid in it, but it sure heals things quickly and will help with inflammation. Follow directions....and use a small amount of Aquafor around the cuticles and dry areas.

Is it all your fingers?

I have anxiety which affects my picking and I’m seeing a therapist for it.
It’s not currently all my fingers. I have only 3 fingers with bandaids on them now because it’s been a few days since I picked so my fingers aren’t super bad right now.
Sometimes when I get nervous or anxious I start picking and can’t stop myself and just kinda do it until there’s no more dry skin left. I mostly pick when the skin is drier.
Another reason I pick is because when I see the dry or flaked skin I think it will look and feel better if I pick it off, but obviously it doesn’t.
Thanks for the product recommendations, I’ll look those up!

Oh my goodness, I do!! - constantly!! I always apologize to the manicurist because it's awful! - and painful! My arms are ridiculously scarred. I'm just a freekin' mess. Anyone have tips on treating the scars. You know, for the cuticles and for picking, tips are great! It makes it impossible to reach the cuticles and even the sensation is diminished! :)

Masarj, I just started using Aquaphor healing ointment. I put it on my fingers at night and this morning they already seem to be doing better! The red areas that I picked at look like they’re less inflamed. The package says it can be used to soothe minor wounds, cuts, scrapes and burns. It also says it protects skin to enhance healing. I got a 1.75 ounce tube for about $5 at Target!

As for your scarring, I haven’t personally used it but Mederma is a scar treatment cream that heals or diminishes scars. I also saw it at Target and I think it’s pretty cheap.

Thanks for sharing, I hope this helps!

Also snipzie, thank you for recommending Aquaphor! I’ll update again if my fingers heal.

Welcome...use it after you wash the area, not over if they haven't been, for it will hold in bacteria.
