People just dont understand

People just don't understand!!!!!!!! Especially when they say "just stop" to us. If it was that easy I think we would already have stopped. Some people think we are dramatic about having dermatillomania. But they don't understand what it's like to ruin your body when we would probably have beautiful skin if we didn't damage it. I know some pickets have acne but I don't. I pick at nothing. I was doing to good for so long and I just picked. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I feel a relief but I feel do guilty at the same time. It should be as easy as "just stop" right? We all wish it was. I think we all want to stop but there is something deep down wanting to keep picking. That's why we do it. We think of what will happen when we stop and nervous. It's so addicting. I wish we were all free of this OCD!!! It brings down our self esteem and brings us so much hurt. People just don't understand.

I agree with you sweetie. People do not understand unless they are in the same boat as us. Everything you just said is how I think and feel. I am so happy I found this site because I now have someone to relate to and talk to. I wish I had a friend by me in NC with this picking issue so I have someone to hang out with like me and can relate to. please write me anytime. I'm hear to listen. Thanks for sharing your story......Holly

My dad is like that. I pick at acne, skin pores, everything. It seems like everything is going great and then bam! you fall off the wagon, as they say. But the evidence of our fall is usually imprinted onto our skin for the next few weeks, making it harder and harder to stay, or even get back on that wagon. When you finally let go and pick, its amazing the relief you feel, the amount of control, not feeling like you cant walk by a mirror or touch your own skin. Its so hard to talk to people about it.

I agree with you completely. Then a BIG sigh of relief then, and then tiredness lol can't win ha ha WOW it's so nice to talk to someone who is like me. You have no idea what a relief it is. It is not hard for me to talk about it to anyone. I mean people look at me strangly but I don't care. I feel strange about myself already. So if people feel it or see it that way .....I just myself....and in myself.... I just agree lol it sucks, but that is what makes us unique and different I guess right....???

I don't know about that. I agree that we're shouldn't feel down on ourselves or ashamed or anything. But I think acceptance is the wrong choice. To be very trite its like that one Glee episode Born This way, the difference between accepting yourself and changing yourself. I relate to Emma as I'm sure a lot of us do. She accepted herself, but still started to seek help for her problem. I think acceptance shouldn't mean we just give up. I cant wait for my copy of The Dragon Who Pulled Her Scales, but I worry that it will preach the same message of acceptance rather than help. Sometimes I think I live for that release, that freedom from tension and failure to control yourself.

Ok and your entitled to your own opinion, but naturally people do feel down or ashamed of themselves. Acceptance is not the wrong choice, but maybe the wrong word. I think we should accept ourselves as GOD made us, and love ourself the way we are or we will then be judging and disapproving on how he individually made us. Now I do not want to insult him, but then again he knows well sin and go through rough times, but that is also why he puts obstacles in our life to. You can always change for yourself for the better, but a part of us are unique and valuable in someway. We each bring some clarity and beauty to the world that others can't. You are right. Acceptance shouldn't mean give up, but it depends on how you take and mean acceptance. Acceptance to me means loving yourself for the way you are. Which I somewhat do for myself, but let's not go there, but then like anyone else we have flaws and things we do not like about ourselves, but if we do not change a little bit here and there, and accept ourselves the way we are. No one will. We should before anyone else anyways, because in the end it's all about loving you in order to love someone else as well. You are not a failure, and everyone tries or does some mechanism to control themselves or the pain they are feeling. Ours is picking, for someone else it could be drinking. It's not right, but where only human, and with experience we can learn and hopefully never do it again and if we do ask for forgiveness and try again. Don't give up....!!!!

I got really pissed off about this today actually, my cousin said 'why don't you try harder and just stop picking' and she also said that she was 'very disappointed' in me. I said you don't think I've tried? If it was that simple/easy you don't think I would? Grrrrr they really just don't understand.I was so upset when she said she was disappointed in me its the only time some I care about so much has said it to me. Everyones like go get help for it then but for me aswell I don't really wan't to stop picking... its such a relief from stress etc.
