Just hung up the phone

I just hung up the phone with our local Mental Health Clinic. Im an 18 year old girl who has been struggling with this at its worst for almost 2 years now. I have been struggling with anxiety and depression for what seems like forever now. Although I can recall the picking at scabs and the pores on my face since I was a child, It never became a problem until recent years. I have tried so many things and my doctor finally said now that im old enough, and we know what the problem is, I need to take care of it. So I called. I will be waiting for a call back to give them further details on my condition. How exciting.

Admitting and accepting what it is, is such an important step because you are understanding it and making sense of the causes and how to rid it. It is a habit that has stuck and obviously been your way of coping with something. I will be honest most doctors know very little about OCD let alone this specific condition so you are going to be a bit of a guinea pig to them and no doubt they will start to off on anti-depressives/anti-anxiety tablets which if you have suffered these in the past you will know what works well with you. It is lame because when I first was given some, I said I wasnt depressed so it was stupid me going on them and they really did turn me into a zombie I slept for days. Whats the good in that? So when you delve into this condition as much as I have I can understand why we must take medication. It is an imbalance in serotonin which does mess up with our anxiety and depression which gives us more ammunition . I don't believe medication alone will cure this but it helps pump up the gauge a bit. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is probably the best thing to help, it has high success rates but it is pricey but it is available on National Health. Where you from hun? Try not to panic too much, you wasnt born with this condition, its like a growth thats attached to your body and you can get rid of it!! Much love x

Yes I have been on anti-depressants for about 2 years now but it wasn't an option until I really had nothing left to do. So I went on celexa and for 2 months i had insomnia, it was terrible. It made me really itchy and i had bags under my eyes and i couldnt eat and i just looked like a drug addict. I switched to prozac and things have definatly improved from my ultimate low.. I believe they can work...just not alone like u said...you need councelling or something else, btw Im from BC. & Whats cognitive behavior therapy????

Cognitive behavioural therapy is just treatment that focuses on your cognitions and behaviours and tries to modify them to improve your condition. So for skin picking the therapist might try to see the underlying thoughts and beliefs that promote the picking (cognitive) and try to alter the picking behaviour (behavioural). No medication is used. It is a really vague term that just means thoughts and behaviour treatment basically.
