Proactive commercial: "Clear skin is sexy skin."

Hi, I'm new here. I've been picking since the age of 14(I'm 35 now). It has been hard, to say the least. Sometimes, I think I want to cut my hands off, although that would hurt a lot...maybe just the fingers ;). What I want to discuss is the current Proactive commercial. Thanks to it, we are officially non-sexy. It's very insensitive and needs to be taken off the air. It just stigmatizes skin pickers even more. I mean, can this be brought to the attention of a particular advocacy agency? Thanks, Sunnye

You know, to tell you the truth, I feel SEXY when I do good with my skin. As much as I'd like to be upset with the comment in the commercial inferring that we aren't sexy, I don't take that message from the commercial, I take it from my own emotions about only myself. When I pick, I don't feel beautiful or feminine or want to play around with my boyfriend. When my skin is clear, I DO feel sexy and put-together and witty. It's unfortunate that the condition of my skin and what I do to it has such control over those emotions, but sadly for me it does...

I pick at my face and I still feel sexy. Perhaps it is not the commercial but something internally that you would like to feel, which is sexy regardless of what the commercial says. Do you find yourself beautiful with clear skin and picked skin? When my skin is clearer I do find my self more appealing. But I still find my self beautiful when it is picked because I am beautiful. I just feel a higher level of beauty when clear. If we did not care about beauty then I would not care about stoping the picking behavior because there is a sense of pleasure in it. I can't help but sense the anger that you had directed at the commercial. I'm sorry that your feeling angry, would you like to talk about that anger more because I would love to hear more about how you're feeling. I get angry sometimes or upset because I can't stop. I believe that is a pretty normal feeling that comes a long with the picking but we always have to bring it back to ourselves to see what is going on at a deeper level. The picking is internal the act is external, meaning we need to heal what is inside of us that is hurting us because it is being reflected on the out side. I care.

Agreed. I just hide it under makeup and am good to go! But my skin does clear up and then only breaks out periodically, so it may be easier for me to say that than someone else. Quote: "I pick at my face and I still feel sexy. " I also agree with below: "I believe that is a pretty normal feeling that comes a long with the picking but we always have to bring it back to ourselves to see what is going on at a deeper level. The picking is internal the act is external, meaning we need to heal what is inside of us that is hurting us because it is being reflected on the out side. " Getting rid of the commercial isn't going to help...much.

My point is that Proactive is using "clear skin is sexy" as a selling point. They don't care about how it might make people feel. I'm assuming that it has made many feel extremely insecure. What about contacting the Attorney General? I don't know exactly what issues they take up in that office. I know this sounds excessive, but unless people push for change, things stay the same--attitudes stay the same. --Sunnye

Yes but all ads are designed to make people feel insecure. . . this is a multi-billion dollar industry you are talking about. "How to look younger, use Olay blah blah blah" Easy Breezy Beautiful Cover Girl. Rejuvenate your lashes. Reduce cellulite! Lose 45 pounds by Christmas! I mean, I think you're really wasting your energy here!! Try to focus on something Positive in your life, and your mood will start to change. Good Luck! Sincerely "Igga".

Do you know that Yoplait pulled its newest commercial after pressure from the National Eating Disorders Association? The Dermatillomania Center should have advocates whose responsibilities include calling out such insensitivities. Every organization should have an advocacy program and most do. People should speak up and say "hey, this isn't appropriate." I guess I didn't get a Sociology degree for nothing...ha, ha!
